Two grade school report cards for Sis (3rd and 6th grades), Kevin (2nd), Paul (7th), and for some reason, maybe Mom being pleased he made it through another year of grade school, five for Jim (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 8th). None at all for Mary Ellen, Norah, or Ann. Mom could have been tired of it all by then, or–and a real possibility this one–they spirited away their report cards before they could be put into the archive where they would be seen by future generations of the family.
Sis got good grades, Kevin, Paul, and Jim, well . . . the best you could say is that we aspired to mediocrity and managed to achieve it most of the time. Lots of sick days for Kevin and especially Jim. We weren’t really sick; it was just a way to escape however briefly the numbing boredom of grade school.
